On June 5th 2018, on the occasion of the World Environment Day, at the Italian Naval League, Castellammare del Golfo (TP), Life SEPOSSO met the boys of the middle schools of Alcamo and Castellammare del Golfo to transmit the importance of the Posidonia oceanica prairies.
Dr. Fabio Badalamenti, with the staff of the CNR-IAMC of Castellammare del Golfo, by means of a small laboratory of Marine Biology setted up for the encounter, explained to the students the marine plants and their botanical characteristics (leaves, rhizomes, roots) as well as the microalgal communities and small invertebrates that populate them.
Furthermore, the lesson focused on the benefits of posidonia meadows on the entire coastal ecosystem, from oxygen production, to the protection of the coastline from erosion, and thus, the fundamental importance of protecting this habitat. The protection of the environment and the sea starts from our small daily gestures. Avoiding to throw litter in the sea and to anchor on the meadows are easy acts that helps to protect the environment and our health.
