As part of the events planned in the Augusta Bay between 9th and 13th July, two meetings were held with the public:
- Wednesday 11 July, 6.00 pm – 8.00 pm, “Isola Magnisi” Boat Club – Contrada del Fico snc – Priolo Gargallo (Siracusa)
- Thursday 12 July, 5.00 pm-7.00 pm, Via Libertà, 73 – Brucoli (Augusta, Siracusa)
In both initiatives, ISPRA technicians and researchers, together with the project partners Dept. Of Earth and Sea Science of the University of Palermo, CNR-IAMC, ARPA Tuscany and Northern Tyrrhenian Sea System Authority, met the citizenship with an information stand set up outdoors. Informal talks with citizens were an opportunity to disseminate essential information about the importance of Posidonia oceanica habitat, ecosystem services and benefits produced by the habitat on the marine-coastal ecosystem. The communication activities were supported by distributing the information products created as part of the Life SEPOSSO project.
The particular context in which the meetings took place, characterized by the presence of a Site of National Interest (a heavily industrialized area with intense pollution problems), stimulated an open discussion on the urgent need for measures to protect the environment in support of public health.
The gadgets of the project were distributed to all those present, proposing educational games designed for both adults and children. Particular attention was given to the little ones, who were given the comic strip story “Discovering the Posidonia oceanica meadows” with the story of the adventures of Posi and Donia (the mascots of the project), conceived and created within the project, and with group games to learn about the wonders of the sea.
The activities were aimed at stimulating the involvement of those present and sharing their experience, encouraging them to disseminate the activities of which they were the protagonists through photos and videos to share on social networks.
